Time to register a team for CFD mud volleyball

Mud volleyball is returning for Catfish Days!
The 20th annual mud volleyball tournament will be held at Route 66 Barr and Grill, 113 E. Baltimore St., Wilmington. The entry fee is $50. Sign up at Route 66 Bar and Grill.
“Yes, we’re still on,” said Chuck Hairald, tournament director. “We’re are definitely 100% in search of teams.”
Hairald is expecting six to eight teams. In that case, he’d run a round robin tournament Friday and Saturday night. After that, they will rank the teams and do a double elimination tournament afterwards to determine a winner.

So far work on new $2.4 million turf field is right on schedule

Reed-Custer High School is switching from natural grass to artificial turf for its football field as part of $2.4 million in improvements.
The Reed-Custer High School Board of Education decided to move forward with the multi-purpose turf field project late in 2021.

Kankakee River Fishing Derby to kick-off Friday

The Northern Illinois Anglers Association said fishing conditions are perfect for the 39th annual Kankakee River Valley Fishing Derby that is set to open Friday with six noteworthy additions.
The 10-day derby gives lucky anglers a chance to hook some cash as long as they pre-register and catch a tagged fish from the river or its tributaries between the Indiana state line through Wilmington.
There will be about 88 tagged fish or about two fish per mile each worth a minimum of $500 each.

Babe’s Tap wins memorial softball tourney for fourth time in five years

The 11th annual Josh Cumming Memorial Softball Tournament concluded on time on Sunday without any rainouts for the first time in a while.
Tournament organizer Todd Cumming doesn’t remember the last time it’s happened but it’s nice and overall the tournament went really well.
“I think this might be the first year we haven’t been pushed back for multiple nights of rain,” said Cumming. “Everything went very well. The biggest thing was we didn’t have to reschedule the games.”

Lady Comets dig into summer workouts

The Reed-Custer volleyball coaches are abuzz with excitement from the talent coming up to the varsity squad.
The Lady Comets hosted summer volleyball camp and got a good turnout which is only going to mean good things for the future of the Comet volleyball program.

Josh Cumming Memorial Softball Tournament underway

The 11th annual Josh Cumming Memorial Softball Tournament is underway in Carbon Hill featuring a 16-team field.
The tournament, which coincides with Carbon Hill’s Homecoming celebration, is named in honor of Josh Cumming, the tournament director’s son who died during a pedestrian/train accident. It features some of the best slow pitch softball players in the area.
“I wish every year he was still around to play in it but it’s great to keep it going for him,” said tournament director Todd Cumming. “I do what I can for the town.”

Comets win two in Braidwood Shootout

The Reed-Custer boys basketball team went 2-3 during the 26th annual boys basketball Braidwood Shootout.
They started off strong as they were clicking on all cylinders in a 95-45 victory over Low Point Washburn.
They continued that success as they pounded Watseka 68-43.
But they ran out of gas late against Fieldcrest, falling 61-50 in the quarterfinal rounds which bumped them to the consolation bracket.
Fieldcrest earned third place over Kankakee in a close, 51-48 win.

The Comets have unfinished business to take care of, a state title

The Comet football summer camp starts this week and the 2022 schedule is locked in so it’s time to talk Comet football. The Comets are charged up, are you?
The Comets made it to the 3A quarterfinals last year but it wasn’t good enough. They have unfinished business left to take care of and they’re not leaving without a state championship. That journey will start Week 1 with two very familiar non-conference opponents.

Future Comet Camp a huge success, attracting 50 enthusiastic campers

It was apparent that there was a lot of excitement surrounding Reed-Custer High School’s annual Future Comet Camp which was held on Monday.
The high school Comets had just got done cementing their best season ever and that influenced the younger kids to come out to camp to get their game on. The Comets pulled in 50 campers which only will mean good things for the future of the Comet football program.

Coalers with two wins in Braidwood Shootout

The Coal City boys basketball team went 2-3 during the 26th annual boys basketball Braidwood Shootout last week.
The Coalers started with a solid 55-32 victory over Roanoke Benson.
That helped them advance to the second round of the Shootout where they came up short 59-58 to Bishop McNamara.
That loss bumped them to the consolation bracket where a 46-39 win over Woodland would help them stay alive.
After that, they ran into the eventual fifth place medalist Momence who escaped with a 55-42 win.
