On Oct. 10, members of the RCHS Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) made their way to the front of the high school once again, to set up camp as well as bring awareness to hunger and homelessness.
Box City of Hope, an annual event hosted by the student organization, gives students a chance to understand the hardships faced by those experiencing homelessness, while raising funds and collecting goods for the local pantry.
In this event, students brave the elements to camp out in a box/tent to step outside their comfort zones and experience what it might be like to be homeless for a night.
This year, 31 students took on the challenge and raised a record $3,225 in just 10 short days.
Students who went above and beyond included: Emberly Schumacher who raised $175, Cayden Hoover who raised $183, Skylar Wilkins who raised $195, Cole Yeates who raised $230, Kayla Schott who raised $350, Quinn Bandy who raised $435.
Cali Cassem raised more than any other student- single handedly raising $550!
"It was an eye opening experience and it changed my perspective on what people deal with on a day to day basis," Cassem said.
Adalyn Steichen said, "It feels good to be part of the solution and help people in need."
Along with this event, RCHS's FCCLA is hosting a canned good drive in Comet Time for the rest of October. Students are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and Both the money and canned goods will be donated to local organizations that can assist those struggling with homelessness.
FCCLA is a co-curricular organization that aims to help youth in public and private schools with family bonds, careers, and participation in the community==
