Coal City gets power back

THE TROUBLE SPOT before Coal City could have its electricity turned back on was on Interstate 55 near Mobile Refinery where high tension lines fell over the roaday Monday night. ComEd need those lines repaired in order to power up the village. This ComEd photo shows the lines over the roadway and had dozens of workers at the scene night and day to replace a tower.

Thankfully, electricity is back on for most of Coal City as ComEd crews worked non-stop to repair a major power line that fell onto Interstate 55 around 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Homeowners north of Division Street got their power back shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday. By 1 p.m., 120 of 2,720 customers had their power back on.

"On behalf of Mayor Spesia and the Board of Trustees, nearly all of the community breathed a sigh of relief as ComEd restored power on both sides of town this morning," commented Village Adminstrator Matt Fritz."Currently, there are approximately 120 customers who are still without power due to 6 reported outages resulting from trees falling on power lines and individual residential services." 

Fritz said at this point, it is imperative for any residents who are still without power to report their outage via the ComEd outage reporting via their website at https://www.comed.com/outages/experiencing-an-outage or by calling 1-800-EDISON-1; one will need the account number or the phone number associated with the electricity account in order to successfully report the outage.

"The Police Department conducted welfare checks on residents throughout the day yesterday and Public Works began its cleanup efforts.  Special thanks go to our neighboring municipality - Diamond.  Due to their power supply having been maintained, the Village was able to stabilize water supply between the two communities due to the interconnection shared between the two municipalities and the Christian Life Assembly Church, kept a cooling center staffed until 8:00pm."

The Coal City Public Works shall continue clearing debris from the parkway as necessary.  Should you have any limbs that must be disposed, Public Works will be collecting throughout the village; please cut the wood into sizable bundles so they can be tossed into dump trucks.  Branches should be no longer than 10’ in length to fit within the bed of the truck.

The village was ready to get "back to normal" after being told by ComEd on Tuesday that towers supporting high tension lines had collapsed near the interstate and special crews were needed for the repair. ComEd could not give an estimated time for repairs but warned it could take until Friday before power might be fully restored.
