Coalers to get first-ever shot at state trophy

SUPER SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS—The Coal City soccer team won the Maroa-Forsyth Super Sectional Monday to advance to the State Finals in Class 1A. The Coalers defeated Williamsville 1-0 to become the first soccer team in school history to make the Final Four. Coal City’s soccer team will play for Class 1A state trophy starting Thursday after winning the Maroa Super Sectional on Monday.
The Coalers edged Williamsville, 1-0, Monday to advance to the Final Four, improving their record to 23-3 overall.
Senior Adrian Dames scored the game-deciding goal for the Coalers in the second half off an assist from senior captain Julian Micetich. The winning goal propelled the Coalers to the farthest they’ve ever gone in a playoff in school history.
On Thursday Coal City will square off against Mendota (24-4) who won 2-1 over Quincy Notre Dame in the Super Sectional. That match will be played at 7:30 p.m. at Hoffman Estates High School.
Beat Mendota and the Coalers will advance to Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. state championship at Hoffman Estates. A loss would mean a return on Friday, against either Columbia (22-5-3) or Chicago C-Adademy (17-4-3) at 11:30 a.m.
It’s an exciting time for coach Steven McCleary and his squad as no matter what, Coal City will soon have its first ever soccer state trophy.
Making history
The Coalers claimed the soccer sectional championship on their own turf Saturday for the first time in their program's history.
Coal City defeated a tough Manteno team 2-1 in their own sectional.
Coal City started the scoring with a nice goal from Julian Micetich, assisted by Dane Noffsinger. In the second half, Dane Noffsinger put the Coalers up 2-0 with a goal he created off the dribble.
After Manteno closed the gap with a late goal, Coal City eventually prevailed in the end to take the sectional championship.
Carter Nicholson had 9 saves in goal.
Sectional starter
Coal City defeated Herscher in the first round of sectionals by the score of 7-2. The first half went back and forth between goals, with Coal City leading at half-time, 3-2.
In the second half, Coal City came out and made a statement, scoring quick and often, while shutting down a very talented offense.
Carter Hollis led the way with 2 goals, with Adrian Dames, Julian Micetich, Dylan Fatlan, Dane Noffsinger and Dominic Chellino each adding in a goal.
Carter Nicholson had a solid game with 8 saves on the night.
