Driver helped out of car before train hits

No one was injured after a Union Pacific freight train slammed head on into a car stuck on the railroad tracks in Gardner.
The Village of Gardner, Gardner Fire Protection District, and Grundy County Sheriff’s Office shared that on Saturday, Sept. 13 at approximately 8 p.m., an area woman, who apparently intended to turn onto Jefferson Street, but instead turned onto the railroad tracks.
The 95-year-old driver attempted to proceed forward, but ended up stuck on the tracks.
With the help of a family member, the woman exited the car before the collision.
No injuries were reported, and the incident remains under investigation.
Several railroad crossings in Gardner were blocked due to the incident and reopened later that night. The Jackson Street railroad crossing which was closed following the accident, reopened Sunday afternoon.
