HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS INCLUDING floating debris, submerged structures and high water conditions led the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to close the Kankakee River to recreational vessels until further notice.

RIVER CONDITIONS HAZARDOUS

The Kankakee River from the Illinois/Indiana state line to the confluence of the DesPlaines River and Illinois River is closed until further notice.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources [IDNR] announced Thursday the river would be closed to recreational vessels starting that evening. The closure impacts the portion of the river that runs through Will, Grundy and Kankakee counties.

It was determined navigation on the river is hazardous due to swift current, floating debris, submerged structures and high water conditions.

IDNR states, “the conditions are also treacherous for emergency service personnel called upon to rescue persons involved in boating mishaps.”
