Kuzma Care named Chamber’s 2025 Member of the Year

Kuzma Care Cottage will be recognized as the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce Member of the Year, serving as the grand marshal of this year’s Christmas parade on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. on Water Street.
Heather Hobbs, director of the food pantry said that the recognition is a humbling reminder of the strength of our community and the impact that can be made when neighbors come together with compassion and purpose.
“Over the past year, we have faced challenges that reflect the growing needs of families and individuals in our area,” Hobbs said. “Rising demand for food assistance, particularly during the summer months when children lose access to school meals, has stretched our resources. At the same time, we have seen a significant increase in seniors seeking help, as the rising costs of utilities, food, and insurance place new burdens on those living on fixed incomes.”
Earlier in November, Kuzma Care met the challenges of providing food and emergency services when SNAP benefits were temporarily cut due to the government shutdown.
“Through the dedication of our volunteers, the generosity of donors, and the support of community partners, we have not only met these challenges but expanded our outreach,” Hobbs said.
“We launched creative fundraising campaigns, strengthened partnerships, and laid the groundwork for sustainable programs that will continue to serve families for years to come.”
For more than 40 years, Kuzma Care Cottage has remained steadfast in its mission: To provide food, support, and care to individuals and families in need, while fostering dignity, compassion, and community collaboration.
“We have fulfilled this mission by serving thousands of families, building strong partnerships with local organizations, and creating a welcoming environment where every person is treated with respect,” Hobbs said. “Our commitment to adapting to changing needs while staying true to our values has ensured that generations of families receive not only food, but hope and dignity.”
Hobbs said that none of the accomplishments of Kuzma Care would be possible without dedicated volunteers.
“Their compassion, time, and tireless efforts are the heart of Kuzma Care Cottage,” Hobbs said. “From stocking shelves to welcoming families with kindness, our volunteers embody the spirit of service that has sustained our mission for four decades.”
Hobbs shared that she is grateful to work within a community that makes the food pantry’s efforts possible.
“Together, we look forward to continuing to fight food insecurity and to building a stronger, more compassionate future for all,” Hobbs said.
The Wilmington chamber will have a presentation with Kuzma Care representatives under the gazebo at Claire’s Corner park following the parade.
