Lady Coaler golfer capture 1st place during IC8 tourney

The Illinois Central 8 Conference golf tournament was held Monday at Wolf Creek Golf Course with the Lady Coaler golf team finishing in first place.
Emma Varnak, Kylee Kennell and Dakota Clubb earned all conference awards for finishing among the top six.
Varnak, a freshman, shot a 112 to place third among the girls standings. Reed-Custer’s Makayla Wilkins (Sr.) took top honors with a 90 and Manteno Kathrine Gaffney (Sr.) runner-up with a 97.
Kennell (So.) shot a 120 to place fourth while Dakota Clubb (So.) turned in a 122 for sixth place. Lady Coalers who also competed were 7th place Darcy Ness (So.) 135, Cassidy Jenke (Jr.) 168 and Calleigh VandeWerken (So.) 186.
The Coal City girls ended with 489 score to beat Wilmington (606) and Lisle (627).
Manteno claimed the boys overall team title with a 351 score, 10 strokes ahead of second place Streator (361) and third place Coal City (372).
The boys finished in 3rd place overall as a team. Ryland Megyeri, Ryne Phelan and Jack Varnak all were awarded all conference. Megyeri, a junior, shot a low 90 score to finish in 1st place overall in the conference out of 52 golfers.
Phelan (Sr.) shot a 92, Varnak (Jr.) carded a 93 while Coalers Dylan Brown (Jr.) and Luke Crater (Sr.) turned in a 97 each. Will McArdle (Jr.) contributed a 100.
Livingston Co. Tourney
On Thursday the Coalers traveled to Pontiac where they finished fifth overall.
Megyeri shot an impressive 85 but was still 15th overall as players from Prairie Central and Normal scored the low 80s.
The Coalers scored 355 overall, 28 strokes behind winners Normal Unv. with a 327. Prairie Central was second with (337), followed by Central Catholic (347) and Normal Community 350.
Rounding out the scoring for Coal City were Phelan 89, Crater 90, Brown 91 and Varnak 99.
The Coalers will compete in the Dwight Invite on Thursday before teeing off on Wednesday, Sept. 28 in the regional at The Sanctuary in New Lenox.
