Patrick J. Sweeney II

WILMINGTON—Patrick J. Sweeney II, 61, of Wilmington, formerly Chicago, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023 at Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center.
Born Oct. 28, 1961 in Chicago, he was the son of Patrick J. and Patricia Ann (Gallagher) Sweeney. Patrick was raised and educated in Chicago, and briefly, in 1986, spent some time on Inis Treabhair, Ireland. In 1997 he married Susan Witchek in Chicago and together they cherished 26 years. Patrick had a true love for all things sports, but was most proud of being a die hard Chicago Cubs Fan. He loved driving, having worked for both Knight and Holland Trucking for many years as a member of Local Teamsters #179. Beyond enjoying sports, you could always find Patrick drinking his favorite beverage Pepsi, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who he loved being the greatest Papa too.
Survivors include his wife, Susan, of Wilmington; one son, Patrick J. Sweeney III; two daughters, Jessica (Brandon) Keymon, of Braidwood and Nikki (Bill) Melka; eight grandchildren: Hunter (Julia), Haylee and Halayna Keymon; Nuala, Aiden, Liam, Keira and Seamus Melka; one great-granddaughter, Nora Raelynn Keymon; two sisters, Kathleen (Carlton “Cully”) Vojtech, of Salem and Pamela Patterson, of Chicago; several cousins and brothers and sisters-in-law; as well as, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.
Patrick was preceded in death by his parents and father and mother-in-law, Thomas (Barbara) Witchek.
The family will receive friends at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 E. Kahler Rd., in Wilmington on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023 from 11 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1 p.m.. Cremation rites will be accorded following services.
Preferred memorials in Patrick’s memory may be made as gifts to the family for their distribution.
