Student enrollment show slight change from first to last day

Student enrollment at the close of the Coal City 2022-2023 school year showed a slight increase from the opening to the end.

At the start of the school year, Unit 1 School District’s five academic buildings served 2,125 students. As of May 31, enrollment increased by 35 students to 2,160.

The largest increase was at the early childhood center as enrollment jumped by 65 students from the first to last day of school.

There were 475 students enrolled at the end of May—203 in pre-kindergarten, 125 kindergartners and 145 first graders.

The elementary school started the year with 283 students and closed out the year with 285 students—148 in second grade and 137 in third grade.

Coal City Middle School reported a final student count of 494 students, a decrease of seven students from the first day enrollment of 501. There were 162 sixth graders, 167 seventh graders and 165 eighth graders at the end of the school year.

There were 23 fewer students at the high school in May than there were in August. The end of the year number reflects the departure of early graduates.

Final enrollment was 613 students—181 freshmen, 143 sophomores, 136 juniors and 153 seniors.

Returning student registration for the 2023-2024 is now open and can be completed online at coalcityschools.org.

New student registration is set for Thursday, July 13 from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Thursday, July 18 from 4-6 p.m. at the district’s administration center. A link to new student pre-registration is also available on the district’s website.
