Wilmington firefighters quick to put out attic fire

SMOKE AND FLAMES can be seen coming from the attic of this home at 29040 S. Route 53 north of Wilmington, during a morning fire on Aug. 7. Four adults, two juveniles as well as several pets were displaced by the fire.

On Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 7:46 a.m., Wilmington Fire Protection District personnel were called to 29040 S. Route 53 north of Wilmington for a reported structure fire.
Based on dispatch information received, a Full Still level response requesting mutual aid was requested immediately while enroute to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a 2 1/2-story single family residence with smoke and fire coming from the attic 1/2 story level. Wilmington firefighters, receiving assistance from several surrounding agencies, quickly extinguished the fire.
The fire occurred in an unhydranted area of the Fire District resulting in firefighters conducting rural water supply operations. A male occupant of the residence was transported by Wilmington EMS to the hospital. Four adults, two juveniles as well as several pets were displaced by the fire. Red Cross was contacted and assisted the family.
On Saturday at 4:41 p.m. as firefighters were returning from a jet ski in distress call on the Kankakee River near Resthaven, a reported structure fire was received at 905 N. Joliet St., Wilmington.
Braidwood personnel covering incidents for Wilmington during the previous call, arrived on scene with a Wilmington firefighter and found a small one-story residence with an active fire in the kitchen.
Additional Wilmington firefighters arriving on the scene conducted a search of the residence for occupants as first arriving firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. A female resident who discovered the fire was outside upon firefighter’s arrival. The female was evaluated on scene and transported to the hospital. While searching the home firefighters rescued two dogs and four cats. Both of the dogs and one of the cats suffered from smoke inhalation and needed to be resuscitated. One dog and a cat perished in the fire, however one of the dogs was revived and transported along with three cats by family of the fire victim to a local veterinary clinic for further evaluation.
The cause of both fires is under investigation.
In addition to the Wilmington fires, firefighters have been busy with several other calls including assistance to Dwight for two separate fires and Bourbonnais for an extra alarm apartment fire.
On Sunday, firefighters responded to the Dollar General on W. Baltimore St for a reported structure fire.
Smoke seen coming over the building was deemed to be from burning logs on an adjacent lot behind the business.
