102-year-old bridge gone, way made for new
A HANDFUL OF residents watched Tuesday afternoon as D Construction crews lifted the 102-year-old steel truss bridge from its piers at the end of the South Island Park. The bridge has been closed for more than two years due to its deteriorated condition. City officials approved replacing the structure with a precast concrete bridge. D Construction in slated to have the new bridge installed by the end of the month.

Seventeen years of discussion and repetitious preliminary work all led back to the starting point where the Kankakee River dam at Wilmington is concerned - nothing can happen to address safety issues there until the state of Illinois becomes the owner of the structure and has access to it.

Coalition awarded drug free grant
The Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community is one of 169 organizations nationwide to be awarded a Drug Free Communities Support Program Grant (DFC). The grant award was announced Tuesday night.

City proposes Launching Pad purchase
Wilmington officials met behind closed doors last week to discuss the possible city purchase of the Launching Pad Drive-In to ensure the Gemini Giant will be the city's tourism ambassador in perpetuity.

Just drop it in the box, or not
Two Wilmington police officers noticed a new clothing donation box at the corner of Baltimore and Kankakee streets. They had no issue with the box's appearance or location, however, they were dismayed to learn the new box accepted donations for a for-profit enterprise, and felt residents should at least be aware where their donations were going.

Mold displaces classes on first day of school
A low-level mold cleanup in four new classrooms at Stevens Intermediate School displaced students for the first day of the 2010-2011 school year.
