View is different from all sides on Lyons’ retirement from Braidwood PD

The change in leadership at the Braidwood Police Department is nearly complete, as a new interim chief has been appointed with plans to make that a permanent appointment later this month.

But the story on the end of Todd Lyons’ more than four years as Top Cop in Braidwood is not over.

Lyons resigned effective immediately last week. Lyons said he was approached by Mayor Karen Hart and asked to resign for the good of the department and the city.

Braidwood’s former top cop is continuing his quest to clarify some expenditures made when he was chief of police.

Former chief Nick Ficarello, who served as chief from 2015 to 2019 under Mayor Jim Vehrs, addressed the members of the City Council and current Chief Todd Lyons regarding an article that appeared in the Jan. 20, 2021 edition of the Braidwood Journal.

That story stemmed from public comments that Ficarello made during the Jan. 12 meeting of the City Council.

New chief brings local ties to police department

Braidwood has a new top cop in place, and his first priority is to work toward solving the budget crisis in the police department.

Todd Lyons was sworn in as Braidwood’s Chief of Police on Friday, April 26. While the position is Lyons’ first time as head of a department, he brings with him a wealth of experience in local law enforcement.

Lyons grew up in Wilmington, the son of Police Chief Frank Lyons. He said he always knew he would end up in law enforcement. In high school, he even did the occasional ride along with the WPD.
