Firefighters quick to extinguish Outer Dr. house fire

The Wilmington Fire District was called to the 600 block of South Outer Dr.  around 1 p.m. on Monday for a reported structure fire. 

Based on dispatch information received, a Full Still level response for mutual aid was requested while enroute to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the front overhead garage door and back of the residence with fire also coming from the rear of the home. 

Wilmington firefighters quick to put out attic fire

On Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 7:46 a.m., Wilmington Fire Protection District personnel were called to 29040 S. Route 53 north of Wilmington for a reported structure fire.
Based on dispatch information received, a Full Still level response requesting mutual aid was requested immediately while enroute to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a 2 1/2-story single family residence with smoke and fire coming from the attic 1/2 story level. Wilmington firefighters, receiving assistance from several surrounding agencies, quickly extinguished the fire.

Driver rescued from vehicle that rolled into river

On Sunday, March 24 at approximately 11:16 p.m. the Wilmington Fire Protection District responded to a call for help from a female driver trapped in a vehicle that had rolled into the water.
The initial address given to Wilmington fire companies responding was in the area of Cottage Road in unincorporated Will County.

New Wilmington fire house gets final approval

With the approval of the City Council, Wilmington is on its way to getting a new fire station.

On Dec. 19, the members of the council approved the site plan with conditional uses and variance for the new Fire Station 1, which will be constructed at the site of Booth Central School next year.

The site plan was approved on the condition that a sidewalk be added to the Kankakee Street side of the property.

The plans were recommended for approval by the planning and zoning board, who reviewed the site plan during a public hearing held earlier in December.

P&Z Board gives green light to new Wilmington fire house

The first step of the plan to build a new Station 1 Fire House in Wilmington has cleared through the city’s planning and zoning board.

On Dec. 7, the board voted to recommend that the City Council approve a final site plan, conditional use, and variances for the site where Booth Central Elementary School once stood. The Wilmington Fire Protection District purchased the site in 2013 for the purpose of eventually moving the fire house there.

City officials said the plans only require one small tweak.

Wilmington police, fire to share drone program

The Wilmington Police Department will create a drone program to assist with law enforcement and safety operations within the city limits.

During the Aug. 8 meeting of the Committee of the Whole meeting, Police Chief Adam Zink presented a request for the purchase of a drone.

Zink told that committee that the purchase will assist the department in preventing and addressing issues, including violent crime at highly attended events, such as parades and festivals. Zink said the current trend for first responders is the addition of unmanned aircraft, such as drones.

The Wilmington Fire Protection District closed the fiscal year last month with a busy and productive 12-months behind them, starting with finally taking possession of two important pieces of equipment.

Wilmington Officers treated on scene after fire rescue

Two Wilmington police officers were treated for smoke inhalation after responding to a weekend fire at an apartment complex on First Street.

The incident happened in the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 8.

The Wilmington Police Department and the Wilmington Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire at a multi-unit apartment complex in the 300 block of N. First Street. While en route to the scene, dispatch advised of heavy smoke emitting from an apartment and the fire originated from a bedroom.

Wilmington Fire spends time in the community

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it harder for the members of the Wilmington Fire Protection District (WFPD) to engage in community outreach.

But, WFPD Chief Tim Zlomie said the district’s firefighter/EMTs still accept the challenge when it comes to being part of the community.

Getting back to a little bit of normalcy, the members of the department were able to meet with preschool students, as well as students from Stevens Intermediate and Bruning Elementary over the past few weeks, as part of October’s Fire Safety Month.

Wilmington will look at updating fire code

The city of Wilmington will look to make some updates on its zoning ordinances, in an effort to bring the city’s fire code in line with international regulations on sprinkler systems and building codes.

Wilmington Fire Protection District Chief Tim Zlomie talked to the members of the Committee of the Whole during their regular monthly meeting on Oct. 12.
