Comets look to burn Devils for second time to move onto second round of playoffs

The Comets made it look so easy on Friday when they dismantled Herscher 49-6.
They’ve been suffocating teams defensively, allowing 11 points per game and near unstoppable on offense as they scored 44 points per game.
They begin the 3A playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday when they host Peotone (5-4), who ended their regular season with a 28-14 loss to Lisle.
The Comets burned the Blue Devils with their passing game 42-6 earlier this season.

Johnston named Chicago Bears Coach of the Week

It pays to play high school football.
The Reed-Custer program is $2,000 richer now that coach Gavin Johnston was awarded Chicago Bears Coach of the Week after their 33-9 win over Coal City on Friday, Oct. 15.
In that game, it was also the first win for the program against the Coalers since 2009. Johnston was honored to receive the award. He actually thought one of his former players was playing a joke on him when the Bears gave him a call.

The Wilmington Wildcats (9-0) will host Chicago (Julian) at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Comets (8-1)  will host Peotone on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Coalers, who finished 6-3, will be traveling to playWheaton Academy at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

Reed-Custer High School in Braidwood has been named the Chicago Bears High
School "Coach of the Week" for Week 8 and quarterback Aiden Cyr of

Comet kickers end season with tough loss to Beecher

The Reed-Custer soccer team had their season come to an end in a hard fought 3-0 loss to Beecher during the Reed-Custer Class 1A Regional Semifinal game on Tuesday.
The Comets and the Bobcats came into the game with two opposite records as the Bobcats were 18-6, and the Comets sat at 5-13-1. R-C coach Andy Gleixner said his guys didn’t let that get to them. It was just another game.

Comets look to avenge loss against Tigers

The last game of the regular season could bring the sweet taste of revenge for the football Comets. They’ll play at Herscher against a team who defeated them last time. The Tigers are coming off of a 19-6 loss to Peotone.
Herscher has had a tough season as they are 2-6. Their two wins came in back-to-back week’s against Dunbar (61-0) and Rochelle (29-27). Since then they’ve gone 0-6 with losses to Streator (45-40), Coal City (17-6), Wilmington (41-7), Lisle (7-0) and Manteno (7-0).

Comets overpower Coalers for first time in 12 years

A wet field and a good defense couldn’t stop Reed-Custer as they ran for over 300 yards to burn Coal City’s boat in a 33-9 victory. Friday marked the first time the Comets have beat the Coalers since the 2009 season.
The Comets moved the ball well and after their first drive stalled out, they got into the end zone as Jake McPherson kept the ball on a read option play and found his way in from seven-yards out to put them up 7-0 as Brandon Moorman’s PAT was right down the middle.

‘Cats, Comets, Coalers set to start volleyball regionals

Area volleyball teams will conclude their regular season this week as they gear up for the regionals starting Monday.
The Reed-Custer and Coal City have been assigned into the Coal City regional while Wilmington landed in the regional hosted by Bishop McNamara in Kankakee.
The Coal City regional will begin with the Comets (7-25-1) taking on Fairbury Prairie Central (10-17) on Monday. If they win, they will play the top seed, Seneca (20-7), on Tuesday at 5:30.
