Lady Comets capture two consecutive victories

The Reed-Custer volleyball team is buzzing as they’ve won their last two, including a 25-17, 18-25, 25-19 win over Peotone on Thursday.
Reed-Custer used their attack game to burn the Devils as they hammered down 16 kills.
Laci Newbrough pounded down six kills to lead the team. She also got up for a block. Mackenzie Keller was big at the net, drilling five kills. She also was second on the team with eight digs while also getting up for three blocks.

Comets looking to avenge spring loss to Coalers

The Reed-Custer bounced back in a big way with a 47-7 win over Streator on Friday and the Coalers are looking to earn a playoff spot after winning four straight, including a 28-6 win against Peotone.
They’ll face off on Friday in a battle where much is at stake for both teams.
Coal City lost to Morris 13-3 for starters before beating Bishop McNamara (14-6). They followed that with a 10-7 loss to Wilmington before winning their last four games against Herscher (17-6), Lisle (24-12) and Manteno (42-14).

Comets capture first playoff berth in 12 years with 47-7 win at Streator

The football Comets have made it to the playoffs for the first time since the 2009 season after burning boats in a 47-7 blowout win over Streator.
The Comets bounced back in a big way and the town was there to greet their bus coming back from Streator on Friday. Reed-Custer coach Gavin Johnston is proud of his players and happy to know everybody is getting behind this season.

Reed-Custer ‘Porksicle’ advances in state contest

There may be a run on the ‘Porksicle’ at Reed-Custer High School now that it has advanced to the semi-final round of the IHSA Pork & Pigskins Championship.
The contest will determmine which high school serves up the best pork sandwich during football games. While Coal City and Wilmington concessions feature hamburgers, in Comet land the porksicle is king.
The Comets made it past the preliminary online vote and have been announced as one of the Savory 16.

Comets look to cage Bulldogs’ big plays to earn playoff berth

The Comets cooled in a 21-14 loss to Wilmington on Friday that ended their five-game win streak.
They’ll be looking to rekindle the fire Friday at Streator who is coming off of a 26-20 overtime loss to Peotone.
Streator has allowed the second-most points in the conference, giving up 29 points per game. The Comets, on the other hand, have one of the best defenses and best offenses in the Illinois Central Eight conference. They give up 14 points per game while scoring 45.

Comets earn Wilmington’s respect in hard fought game with Wildcats

There’s no reason to hang heads after losing 21-14 to the No. 1 team in the state.
It was a tough loss Friday for the Comet football team that saw their perfect run after five games suffer its first loss.
The Reed-Custer football team showed Friday they were every bit as good as Wilmington. It was just not enough to win. And Reed-Custer coach Gavin Johnston admitted it was the result of great coaching.

The Reed-Custer volleyball team got off to a good start but Manteno recovered, losing 21-25, 9-25 on Thursday.
The Comets started off fast but just couldn’t put the Panthers away.

Comets burn Devils with big play to capture playoff berth

So far the football Comets cannot be stopped.
They scored over 40 points for the fifth consecutive week to plow through Peotone 42-6 to earn their first playoff berth in 12 years.
“We’re making history,” said R-C football coach Gavin Johnston. “That’s not the end all goal. Our kids are expecting to do this so we’re not going to stop. We’re so hungry for a lot more.”
The Comets were clicking offensively and their defense was swallowing up every Blue Devil run play. The defense allowed 113 yards of offense.

Lady Comets take two levels against Streator

The Reed-Custer volleyball team beat Streator in two sets, 25-21, 25-19, on Wednesday, thanks to serving which was on point.
The Lady Comets served up seven aces. Lily Schott led the charge with three while Halie LaGrange chipped in two, and both Mackenzie Keller and Olivia Smith supplied another.

The Comets have burned a lot of boats so far and the big question is whether they will be able to sink ships at Wilmington on Friday.
Reed-Custer, like the Wildcats, are undefeated in five games, most recently Friday’s 42-6 rout of Peotone which helped them qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2009. The Comets outpaced Elmwood Park (60-0), Arcola (56-34), Lisle (42-14) and Manteno (55-7) before their win against the Blue Devils.
